Getting Fuzzy with It

If you search “furries” on Google Images, most of what shows up are demotivational posters depicting people dressed as animals at large conventions. There is also the occasional image of a woman/girl scantily clad in ears and a tail. Nearly all of the images depict derision, laughter and scorn.

Which leads me to this question: Why is it still okay to make fun of furries?

(Note to those who are going, “Furry what? Fuzzy huh? Where? Why?”: What is a furry? According to Wiki, furry fandom is “a fandom for fictional anthropomorphic animal characters with human personalities and characteristics.[1] Examples of anthropomorphic attributes include exhibiting human intelligence and facial expressions, the ability to speak, walk on two legs, and wear clothes. Furry fandom is also used to refer to the community of people who gather on the Internet and at conventions.[2]

But not even Urban Dictionary can agree on an actual definition.

In the sexual/erotic sense, furries can mean anything from puppy and kitty play to pony play to, well, pretty much animal you can think of play.).

Furries are one of the last bastions of sexual exploration. Most people don’t make fun of BDSM anymore. They don’t make fun of different sexual orientations (religious groups, etc. notwithstanding). They don’t knock relationships that cross racial, gender or non-monogamous boundaries. We can all agree that lusting after some hot chick or man in a cosplay getup is hot. So, what’s with the lack of respect for furries?

If you’re unsure what the appeal is of furrydom, or even where to start, I’d like to suggestion Michelle Houston’s “Cowboy’s Dungeon.” This lovely romance is hot and sexual, and a well-written read that doesn’t go so heavy on the pony play that you’ll be scared off by it.

Natalie’s husband is the dominant in their sexual relationship. In all other aspects, she has an equal say, but when it comes to the bedroom (or his playroom) he sets the pace. Out in the barn, he has created a “dungeon” that would rival any city master’s domain … but he has added his own touch. Content warning: D/s, pony play, spanking, very hot but will be light on plot.

Mr. Gurney, I am a furry cnvieotnon veteran (shhh!). I wasn’t planning to go to any this year, until I found that you are GOH at AC 2010. Now, it is IMPERATIVE that I attend with my sister. Dinotopia was a key book in my formative years. I used to stare at those paintings for hours, trying to work out how they had been created. Thank you for inspiring me, for sharing your incredible blog full of wisdom, and for giving furries a chance ;_; we are the nicest bunch of freaks you could ever hope to meet. Glad to know the Anthroconstaff has been an example.Look for me wearing a Dinotopia-themed, airbrushed t-shirt, which I will hope to have autographed. Peace!
